A very low growing species which, when happy, will spread into any gaps in surrounding planting and among rocks and pavements. The low growing grey-green foliage is feathery and soft, it spreads and self-seeds easily forming dinner plate sized clumps. Small, delicate, flat heads of cream flowers appear in late spring to summer and are popular with all the insects.
Frost hardy (below -5 C) and heat and drought resistant in deep improved soils, soils that will retain some moisture, it will also do well in partially shaded areas, however it can be a bit of a lottery with this Achillea. We have seen this plant growing in quite inhospitable conditions, particularly where it has self seeded, which it will do. For this reason, it is often added to lawn alternative plant mixes where it seems to bed down amongst the other plants, perhaps benefitting from the shelter they offer.
We've also heard about it being added into "converted" lawns where the watering has been greatly reduced, and the lawn turned over to whatever will colonise it. As the less drought tolerant grasses die out, the Achillea will colonise these spaces - and it is suitable for foot traffic and soft underfoot. We've seen it growing seasonally in gravel mulched gardens and in paths, if it likes the conditions you have, it's a plant that once it establishes, will find its own niche in your garden.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
