Lily of the Nile. An evergreen, clump-forming plant with white flowers ranging from 60 to 75 cm tall, blooming from late spring into early summer. The bright white flowers look great against a dark green backdrop of shrubs or when mixed with blue-flowering agapanthus — a typical combination in Mediterranean-style gardens. Like the other agapanthus, it is well suited to the Algarve climate due to its preference for full sun and tolerance of our clayey soil. It thrives in areas with a winter rainfall pattern similar to its native Western Cape in South Africa, where it grows in fynbos ecosystems on rocky slopes and sandy soils. While it can tolerate summer droughts in heavier soils, it benefits from regular watering during the growing season, particularly in spring and summer. Deep, infrequent drenching (once a fortnight) is more effective than frequent, shallow watering. Improving the soil by adding organic matter will also help it withstand droughts. For optimal growth, plant it in full sun and protect it from harsh winter frosts if you experience these in your garden. Fertilise with a liberal application of organic fertiliser in late autumn and spring.
This plant can withstand salty sea winds, making it ideal for coastal gardens. It is also adapted to survive fire and can re-sprout from its thick, fleshy roots. Its low growth habit and lack of substantial vegetation mass also make it ideal for planting in fire protection zones around buildings. Agapanthus are better planted in tight groups, 30 cm apart, rather than in the municipal polka-dot style often seen on roundabouts. Every two to three years, they can be split in half by cutting through them with a spade, with one half replanted in a new position in autumn to create larger beds.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
