The Kurrajong bottle tree. A small to medium-sized, vigorous tree that usually grows to around 6-10 metres, but older trees can reach 15 metres. It is native to eastern Australia and grows in a range of habitats from the semi-arid interior to the wetter coastline. In the right conditions, open, rocky and well-drained soils, it can grow rapidly and make a good shade tree or the dense canopy can be used to block an unwanted view. They are sometimes called bottle trees in reference to the shape of their extended trunk, which is used to store water during periods of drought. This adaptation is also thought to give it a natural resistance to fire. The crown is often narrow until the tree reaches maturity, making it suitable for use as a street tree in urban areas.
The tree is evergreen with glossy, reflective, dark green leaves, 5-8 cm long, which shimmer in the sunlight when there is some wind. The bark is smooth and often green. The flowers are variable in colour and number, sometimes only a few appearing but in other years hanging in large clusters. They are bell-shaped, pale white to pink and fleshy. The foliage can vary greatly in shape and size, and can be simple and pointed or with several pointed lobes. Large clusters of woody seed pods appear in summer and remain on the tree for many months.
This is not really an ornamental tree, it is used more for structure or shade, but it is a hardy tree that will grow in any well drained, rocky soil and will adapt to the harshest of conditions.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
