The South American jelly palm or pindo palm was previously know as Butia capitata however this is likely a mistake and the two species are separate, B. orarata being the species in horticultural production. These Butia palm are native to southernmost Brazil and Uruguay growing coastally in the restinga habitat, an area of low forest on dry and nutrient poor sandy soils in Southern Brazil. They are hardy down to -5C and double this when mature (they withstood many frosts here in the nursery). They grow a stout trunk up to 10 metres although half this size is eventually more typically achieved. They are slow growing and distinguished by their distinct feathery blue green foliage which, unlike other palms, curls downwards and inwards towards the trunk. They are often planted in multiples (5-7) as this inward facing foliage gives a reduced crown diameter making it easier to create a compact group.
They are an attractive small and quite tidy palm, the spiralling leaf stalks on the trunk produce a distinct pattern and are often cut quite long in order to enhance this feature. Named after their fruit the specific epithet odorata is derived from the Latin word for 'perfumed' and was chosen by João Barbosa Rodrigues (one of Brazils greatest botanists) in 1891 to reflect the highly aromatic nature of the fruit, considered among the best palm fruit for consumption in Brazil at the time. Evidently it tastes like pineapple, apple, banana, apricot and vanilla with flesh like a nêspera (loquat) - yum, yum!
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
