Silver bush. A shrub with beautiful silky, silver evergreen leaves. Creates a spreading mound of soft velvety silver leaves and pure white morning glory flowers. Flowering begins in April and continues until July. Pink buds appear amidst the silver foliage, which then open into white flowers. It doesn't tolerate humidity in summer since it is vulnerable to fungal diseases, so be careful when watering other plants nearby. Grows best in full sun, in free draining soils, and tolerates alkaline soil well. It is heat and drought tolerant and recovers well in Autumn once it receives some rain.
Plants like this, those that form a mound or "pin-cushion" shape, are designed to be dry when they are not growing (Lavenders, Rosemary and so on). If they are watered, deliberately or accidentally, for example from garden sprinklers, the moisture can get trapped under the plant, creating a damp microclimate which often leads to fungal diseases or rotting-off, bug heaven! In summer the plant has no defences, it cannot repair itself, but in the winter the plant can cope because it is actively growing. Of course the temperatures are also lower, so there is less or different bacterial and fungal activity. If you have to water, do deep watering, once in the evening or early morning, after the daytime temperatures have dropped. You can even prop-up plants like Convolvulus for a day to make sure the foliage dries out.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
Please note we have no retail outlet or garden centre and are not open to the public. For more information you can contact us here.
