Franchets Cotoneaster is a fast growing semi-deciduous (rarely deciduous in southern Portugal) shrub with attractive red/orange berries in Autumn. It can grow up to 3 metres tall, sometimes presenting itself as a small tree. Sage green leaves with white undersides, white flowers tinged with a little pink in May and June. Large plants, when in flower, can be spectacular with vast numbers of bees and other insects swarming over the plant. The plant can be equally attractive when covered in the red berries that follow on a few months later. These are a valuable food source for birds in winter.
A good plant to grow as a single specimen or in mixed planting screen planting, it makes an excellent hedge. It will make a 60-80 cm wide by 200-250 cm hedge in a few years if planted in an improved soil and given regular water in summer. Thereafter, it can be weaned off the water and only needs a little help in the hottest months.
Cotoneaster stands out for its ability to absorb air pollution, (this is why it is often planted on roadsides) it likes the sun and does best in a deep well-drained, dry soil.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
