Jacarandas are one of the prettiest trees that will grow easily here. It is a large deciduous tree, growing up to 20 m in height, with spreading branches making a light crown. It will lose its leaves late in winter and come back into leaf, usually after flowering, in late spring to early summer. This makes it a perfect tree, providing it has enough space. Sitting underneath it, you can enjoy shade and shelter in the summer, and filtered sun in the winter.
When trees are not in flower, the finely cut foliage is also attractive, especially at close range. The small leaves do tend to drop frequently, so it would not be good close to a swimming pool.
In our opinion, Jacaranda are best planted when still small. They grow rapidly and will form much better roots if planted at a size of around 100 cm tall. If they are planted in a very exposed position, especially in a paved area, they are susceptible to high-temperature trunk scald. The thin bark can be damaged and die on the sunny side. This is much more likely to happen when planting a larger, older tree that has been removed from a shady position in a nursery. For this reason, they should only be pruned gently, to avoid sunburn. So do consider how much space the tree needs before you plant it.
If possible, give it plenty of water in the first 2 years. After that, it should be established and drought tolerant.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
