Morus alba, known as white mulberry, common mulberry and silkworm mulberry, is a fast-growing, small to medium-sized deciduous tree which grows to up to 10–20 m tall when mature. The species is native to China and India and is widely cultivated and naturalized throughout much of the warm temperate world. They thrive in mildly acidic, well drained, sandy loam and clayey loam soils, but they can withstand poor soils as well and are sometimes used in soil recovery plant mixes.

The fruit are edible when ripe (although they are not a single fruit as such, but a compound cluster of several small drupes). They are variable in colour, from white tinged with purple, pink, red and dark purple when ripe. They are smaller than the black mulberry, up to 1.5 cm in diameter and supposedly more bland, although when dried I can't taste the difference. Like the black mulberry they are eaten fresh, dried or preserved and made into jams and sherbets, particularly in the middle-east. Very nice when dried and added to mixes of nuts or muesli.

The white mulberry is widely cultivated for it's foliage, used to feed the silkworms employed in the commercial production of silk. It has been grown widely from the Indian subcontinent west through Afghanistan and Iran to southern Europe for more than a thousand years for leaves to feed silkworms. In the botanical world, it is also notable for the rapid release of its pollen, which is launched at greater than half the speed of sound! This could mean the pollen is problematic for asthmatics and hay fever suffers.

Morus alba is used extensively in urban gardens across the desert cities of the southwestern United States where it is prized for its shade and fruit. Like any fruit tree, the better the conditions they have the better the fruit they will produce, but this goes for establishing all trees, you need to look after them in the early years, whether you want fruit or not - some deep summer watering's and a thick organic mulch will help them establish.
