Guava is a small fruit tree. It can be easily grown as a container plant, but they make a very nice small garden tree planted in the ground. The bark and trunk are also a pretty feature. Soft aromatic fruits about the size of a small peach, ours have pink flesh and a yellow skin and can be eaten raw or cooked. It grows up to 5 metres tall and produces small edible fruits. Self-fertile and remarkable for attracting wildlife.
Widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, native to South America. For some reason, it seems to be little known in Portugal. They are drought tolerant and do not need much water, but they will benefit if they are given a deep watering every few weeks when fruiting.
They contain a lot of vitamin C and can be eaten fresh or processed into juice, jam or liqueur. Its fruit is amazingly rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and dietary fibre. The dried leaves can also be used as tea. Psidium guajava has been used in traditional medicine by many cultures throughout Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. It is used for inflammation, diabetes, hypertension, caries, wounds, pain relief, fever, diarrhoea, rheumatism, lung diseases, and ulcers.
