Salvia nemorosa 'Violet Queen' is a cultivar of Salvia nemorosa. This is one of the finest cultivars of the 'Woodland Sage'. The flowers are small deep purple-violet lipped flowers, clustered along numerous upright stems that rise above plant foliage. This is a cultivar reaches about 60cm tall at maturity, bearing flowers over a throughout the summer period. Like most Salvias, it is good for bees, butterflies and other insects. It is a deciduous Salvia that will disappear to all but a few old leaves at ground level once there is the slightest frost, sprouting again with new growth as soon as the weather warms up.
Trim back any spent flower stalks after initial flowering to promote fresh shoots, leaving stalks 10 cm above ground level. Depending on the weather or as soon as it stops flowering, cut back hard in late autumn as the old stems die off, new growth comes from the base, so any retained old growth can be removed in Spring.
