Italian cotton lavender is an evergreen sub-shrub native to Italy. Its native habitat includes nutrient poor grasslands and roadsides. Grows best in full sun. Unlike the majority of plants, it will be at its best in poor, unimproved soils, however it is not tolerant of clay based locations. S. etrusca makes an excellent choice for borders, edging, dry locations and containers. It will clip into a neat hedge and has been used in knot gardens and to edge borders in formal gardens for centuries. Left untrimmed, it will grow to approximately 50-60cm high.
As a low maintenance specimen or planted in groups, it has masses of pale cream flowers in late spring that last into early summer. Remove the faded flower-heads along with any straggly shoots in autumn. In early-spring, cut back the flowered shoots to within 2,5 cm of the old growth.
Dried cotton lavender leafs are a successful moth deterrent in stored textiles.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
