Spartium junceum, known as Spanish broom, rush broom, or weaver's broom, it is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae and the sole species in the genus Spartium. As a nitrogen-fixing plant, Spanish broom may enrich soil nitrogen levels. It is closely related to Cytisus.
A small deciduous shrub with a semi-woody texture. The numerous large, fragrant yellow flowers occur in spring and summer. Its branches are thin, flexible, green and long, resembling reeds. The leaves are lanceolate or linear, small, tapered and sparse. It is a xerophytic plant, with leaves adapted to reduce water loss through transpiration. To compensate for the reduction in leaves, the branches also have a photosynthetic function. Its beauty stands out when planted on its own, in clumps or clusters. It has a good capacity to contain erosion and improve soil fertility, as it is a legume. It was once widely used in landscaping and for lining road embankments. Naturalised on the edges of pine forests and woodlands. It should be grown in full sun, in well-drained sandy soils and is tolerant of saline and poor soils.
Broom is a graceful shrub that can be grown in country, contemporary or Mediterranean-inspired gardens. Formative pruning should be carried out every two years and renews the foliage.
Its botanical name, Spartium, comes from the Greek spartion and refers to plants that produce textile fibres and are used to make bandages.
