Chaste tree, monk's pepper or chasteberry, is a useful deciduous shrub native to Southern Europe, particularly the Mediterranean region. The soft green leaves, flowers and seeds are aromatic with a spicy scent similar to crushed sage.
Slender, purple flower spikes in late summer or early autumn resemble those of Buddleja (butterfly bush) and are equally useful to bees and butterflies. It can be pruned to form a small tree or used as a screen or hedge. To encourage flowering, cut out the old flowering shoots and remove the seeds to prevent self-seeding.
It prefers full sun and loose, well-drained soil with adequate but not wet soil moisture. Once established, it does well in a hot, dry environment and tolerates drought.
Vitex agnus-castus has long been known to traditional medicine and herbalists, having been described by the ancient Greek physicians in the 6th century BC.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
