An evergreen compact clumping grass grown for its striking blue foliage. It can reach a height and spread of 20-25 cm and is drought tolerant once established, although a reasonable garden soil is probably best as it will retain some moisture. Fescues do not like watering from above (wetting their foliage) as this can lead to rotting-off in the centre of the plant. For maintenance and the best foliage effect you can cut off the dead foliage, but do this only on the perimeter of the plant. Alternatively some people prefer to leave this dry 'skirt' alone however removal in a damp winter will prolong the life of the plants.
Like most Fescues these are compact plants that hold their circular pin-cushion shape and don't multiply, they can be planted individually as a specimen or in tight groups of say 3, 5 or 7. It can be treated as a companion plant filling in amongst succulents or more compact plants such as Centauria or thymes, particularly those that are clipped or shaped. More often it is seen planted on mass as ground cover, in such cases it is important to get the plant spacing right, probably 20 - 40 cm is best and randomly, varying the spacing and grouping the plants within the area, otherwise a Polka dot, soldiers on parade effect is created. And like other Fescues it grows well in a container.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
Please note we have no retail outlet or garden centre and are not open to the public. For more information you can contact us here.
