Algerian oak, native to southern Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. Despite the scientific name, it does not occur naturally today in the Canary Islands, though it may have in the past. Quercus canariensis is a tree that is rare on the Iberian Peninsula and whose distribution in Portugal is restricted to the Serra de Monchique and its adjacent area. It is now critically endangered with only an estimated 250 mature individulas concentrated in this area. One of the main dangers which may lead to its extinction are the regular forest fires which occur in this region. It requires damper and more fertile soil than most other native Oaks. The foliage is marcescent and evergreen as some of the leaves remain on the tree after withering until spring, while others remain green throughout the winter.
Many people seem reluctant to plant Oak trees because they say they will never live to see it as a mature tree. But even after 10 years it will grow into quite a reasonable size. Depending on your soil and available moisture, you can expect it to reach 5 metres or more. By then it will be flowering and producing acorns and will go on doing so for future generations.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
