A very neat, small, clump forming succulent with a large tuberous root system. Delosperma lineare are small creeping surface rooted plants rarely exceeding 10 cm in height and 40 cm in wide. When planted together they form a knitted mass of surface greenery. They will bloom almost all year round with an intense yellow daisy-like flower that hardly protrudes above the foliage. It thrives in direct sunlight and will also tolerate some shade, withstand high temperatures as well as being frost resistant to -10C - so long as it is not persistent.
The soil or growing medium should be free draining, but otherwise they seem to tolerate nutrient poor soils, stony or sandy ground. Although extremely drought tolerant, they do need occasional water in summer, particularly when establishing and if they are in shallow soils. This plant is not really a lawn alternative if there is foot traffic, it will withstand access for maintenance, but the leaf structure can be damaged by persistent pedestrian traffic. Recommended planting rates are 20 plug plants per square metre, but could be lower at 12 with larger, more established plants. Whether this plant is a candidate for "natural" roof gardens has yet to be seen. Coming from South Africa in a summer rainfall area, we think it will not withstand our hot dry summers without some irrigation.
We are a plant nursery in the Algarve specialising in dry mediterranean species. We propagate and grow our own stock in conditions they are likely to endure when they are planted out.
We grow plants that are adapted to the dry land conditions in Portugal and southern Spain, both mediterranean perennials and succulents.
We choose plants that require very little water and maintenance. We produce a range of dry land plants that are typical of the worlds mediterranean regions. These are available to order ready for planting in the wetter months of the year. Please order the plants you need and we’ll have them ready at the best time for planting.
To ensure your new plants adapt and establish quickly, we produce them in special anti-spiral root pruning containers and a range of fibre pots (no plastic waste) with our own tried and tested growing media.
