This popular succulent is often misnamed as Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, which is similar but does not have the deep red colour of K. luciae. It also has a different flower stem and colour.
It forms a basal rosette of large, rounded, fleshy leaves that are greyish green with red edges. The foliage can reach up to 30cm in height, while the inflorescences can reach up to 120cm in height and are also covered with a white powder. The lower leaves on the inflorescence are rounded and become smaller as they ascend along the flowering stem. The dense inflorescence has small tubular flowers, about 15mm long, with a sweet fragrance. It is less attractive than the foliage and after flowering the mother plant will usually produce many small plantlets, increasing the size of the clump.
Kalanchoe luciae is found in grassland and bushveld habitats, usually in rocky situations or on exposed slopes and hilltops, in South Africa and Swaziland. In their natural habitat, Kalanchoe luciae plants are sometimes exposed to harsh temperatures and have adapted over many years to survive. As well as being succulent, the upright leaves are directed towards the sun to minimise the surface area exposed to the sun, helping the plant to conserve moisture. The pale colour of the leaves also helps to reduce the effects of heat. The white, floury coating on the leaves and inflorescence helps to reflect the sun away, helping to keep the plant cool.
They make a beautiful feature in rock gardens, on rocky banks and as container plants. They look fantastic when planted in masses, and their red leaf edges are particularly attractive. To bring out the best colour, these plants need full sun and drought, as well as cool winter nights. The plants will tolerate light to moderate frost, but severe frost will burn the leaves or leaf tips. Remember that these plants originate from well-drained, rocky areas and prefer a similar garden habitat with well-drained soil and plenty of direct sunlight to thrive.
